How Clay Siegall Came to Found Seattle Genetics

Published / by Logan / Leave a Comment

Clay B. Siegall, in an interview with IdeaMensch, shared some of his thoughts on his life and on Seattle Genetics, which he founded. When asked on what brought him to found Seattle Genetics, he said that watching his father’s struggle with cancer from when Clay Siegall was nineteen years old until his father’s death when he was twenty four years old brought him to the realization that there are few tools available for oncologists, so he set out to help them. He earned a doctorate in genetics from George Washington University and worked for Bristol-Myers Squibb in their Pharmaceutical Research Institute for many years. His goal is to treat cancer and do better than what we are doing now.

You see, Seattle Genetics develops drugs and cures that weren’t previously around. For example, they developed ADCETRIS® (brentuximab vedotin), which is a global brand that is approved in sixty five countries around the world and is used to cure cancer.

For entrepreneurs, Clay says that you should always be learning. You think you know everything when you’re twenty years old, but you realize later that you don’t, so always interact with people and learn. One business strategy that has helped Seattle Genetics grow is the way they interact and work with other businesses. For example, they entered into many strategic alliances for Seattle Genetics’ ADC technology, including with Genentech.

As mentioned, before founding Seattle Genetics, Dr. Clay worked at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute. This was from 1991 to 1997. Before that, he worked at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health from 1988 to 1991. He is on the board of directors of many medical companies, including Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical, Alder BioPharmaceuticals and Washington Roundtable. He has received many awards. For example, he has received the award of University of Maryland Alumnus of the Year for Computer, Math and Natural Sciences in 2013, and the Pacific Northwest Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2012. He holds fifteen patents and has authored over seventy publications. He has a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Maryland, besides his genetics degree.

Which is the Origin of Kabbalah?

Published / by Logan / Leave a Comment

There may be no one knowing the source of Kabbalah. It is of the ancient times, and it got lost in time, mythology and space. It is just like other marvels that exist in the world today such as Tarot and chess. Those who are experienced Kabbalists have a belief that the basics of the spiritual system initially began on the banks of Nile River in Egypt and that happened in the past. It is said that Moses is the one who was responsible for the transformation of the wisdom and knowledge in Exodus. He did this so that he can build a society that was modern and enlightened.

Afterward, the Jewish throughout the centuries continued to practice Kabbalah. It was practiced as a branch of Judaism. The aim was to get the questions that were not addressed by Torah regulations and practices answered. At the time, there was orthodox that was deeply rooted in the society, and they would accuse the Kabbalists false thoroughly. That explains why the Kabbalist did their training in secret and later would present their teachings in the form of esoteric Bible interpretations. As you may know from history, there are spiritual and esoteric sects that have always been hunted by the mainstream religions. Such include Muslims and some Christians.

There is the traditional creation story of Kabbalah. The story relates to Adam and says that he received Kabbalah wisdom after he fell from Eden. He received the manual that explained to him how to be able to go back to heaven, and that is the Kabbalah. Afterward, Adam passed the knowledge and wisdom to his sons, and it continued to be passed from generation to generations. Finally, the understanding reached Adam, and some Kabbalists have a belief that Abraham was the one responsible for writing the first Kabbalist book which is called Safer Yetzirah or the formation book.It is believed that Moses later received the Kabbalah on Mount Sinai. It is believed he receive directly from God. There was then oral transmission from one generation to other thanks to the brilliant leaders who could not be deterred by the community who had negative thoughts about them.

Clay Siegall leads the way in development of targeted cancer drugs

Published / by Logan / Leave a Comment

Clay Siegall is the founder and CEO of Seattle Genetics, a firm dedicated to the development of new drugs in the fight against cancer. Since 1998, Dr. Clay Siegall has led the firm to the development of the world’s first FDA-approved antibody drug conjugate, ADCetris. Today, the company holds over 20 patents and has eight drugs currently in the development pipeline.

I want a new drug

Dr. Siegall founded Seattle Genetics in 1998 shortly after leaving a senior research post at Bristol-Myers Squibb. At the start, he had a little more than a small staff of researchers and a thin budget. By 2001, Siegall was ready to lead the company in its IPO. This event, the largest biotech IPO in history, raised over $1.2 billion and infused Seattle Genetics with sufficient capital to continue on their mission to develop new and innovative drugs in the fight against cancer.

Over the next decade, the firm developed a number of patented processes and novel drugs that would go on to become staples in various areas of cancer treatment. In 2011, ADCetris, an antibody drug conjugate, became the first drug of its kind to be approved by the FDA for use in actual treatment of cancer patients. The drug was initially approved for use in refractory cases of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but it is now being considered for a wide range of other possible diseases.

Seattle Genetics currently has eight drugs in the development pipeline. Dr. Siegall hopes that these drugs will prove effective across a wide array of cancer types. With the proven success of ADCetris, Dr. Siegall is confident that these new drugs in development will soon be FDA-approved and on the shelf within the next 5 to 10 years.

The potential of this class of drugs almost cannot be overstated. Because of their ability to target only malignant tissue, antibody drug conjugates have the potential to become a cure for many types of cancer. This is due to the property that these drugs do not systemically release cytotoxic agents. It is the systemic release of cytotoxins that caused the horrendous side effects of chemotherapy. By eliminating this problem, antibody drug conjugates promised to radically increase the therapeutic window available to fight malignant tissue. This may allow total destruction of the malignancy and just one course of treatment.

Lime Crime – Unicorn Hair Re-Imagined

Published / by Logan / Leave a Comment

The company Lime Crime recently launched a new line of semi-permanent dyes called “Unicorn Hair“. They offer up a variety of thirteen colors, with cute and catchy buzz-word names like: “Sext”, “Dirty Mermaid”, and “Anime”. According to the company’s website, with proper care the 100% vegan and cruelty-free dyes will last up to six weeks before requiring reapplication, which is fairly typical for semi-permanent dyes. The dyes come in two different types, ‘full coverage’, which is ideal for vibrant colors on light bleached/platinum hair, and ‘tints’ which will create a pastel color on light blonde hair. It is suggested that the product be applied to medium to light blonde hair for the best results.

At sixteen dollars per 6.76 fluid ounce bottle, they’re a bit pricey for what they are, especially when compared to similar products on the market. The site recommends using 2 jars for thinner past-the-shoulder length hair and 2-3 jars for thicker hair of the same length. All told, that costs the consumer around $32-$48 per application. Though it is somewhat expensive, it’s still significantly less than going to a salon and far less damaging to the hair.

One of the draws of these products is that when they’re applied to evenly bleached/lightened hair, they will fade gracefully over time. Even if the initial desired result is a bright and vibrant color, most users will be happy to see the color fade to a more pastel tone as time passes, and it’s easy to re-apply when desired. The application process is simple and straight-forward: Apply in one inch strips with an applicator brush from root to tip on clean, dry hair and process for up to two hours for a more vibrant result or as short as thirty minutes for a more pastel shade. There are no harsh chemicals and it won’t bleed onto your pillow case or clothing, making it relatively mess-free. Unicorn Hair by Lime Crime seems like a great way to keep your hair on-trend with no damage and a variety of color options. http://www.naimies.com/manufacturer/lime-crime

Goettl Expands Its Las Vegas Market Share

Published / by Logan / Leave a Comment

The Goettl Air Conditioning brand is currently continuing its aggressive return to the Las Vegas market after spending almost a decade outside the market of one of the largest cities in Nevada. Under the leadership of owner Ken Goodrich the Goettl Air Conditioning company is looking to return to the home city of the owner and CEO who cut his own teeth repairing Goettl brand units across Las Vegas; in a bid to reenter the market in an effective way Goettl has merged with a number of leading Las Vegas based air conditioning and plumbing companies with established business contracts in place.

Two of the latest Las Vegas based companies to merge into the Goettl family have been Paradise Air and Las Vegas Air whose owners gave numerous reasons why the merger with Goettl made sense for themselves and their employees. The addition of both companies adds around 20 employees and 15 trucks to the Goettl company, and allows the brand historically headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona to add existing customers in the residential and commercial sectors to its ever growing list of companies. One of the partners in Las Vegas Air explained to the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he felt the merger provided his employees with a level of security and benefits he would normally be unable to provide.

Adam and Gust Goettl were born in Austria and made their way to Springfield, Ohio in the 1920s and made their name developing heating elements used to defrost frozen pipes during harsh northern winters. After arriving in Arizona during the Great Depression the brothers switched their attention to developing cooling units that were unavailable in the region during the 1930s and quickly found themselves the owners of around 100 patents.

The development of the Goettl brand has continued at a fast rate since ken Goodrich took control in 2013 and has looked to return the company to Las Vegas as he feels this is the true home of the brand. Recently awards and recognition have flowed towards Goettl with the brand named as one of the top companies in Arizona in terms of reputation.
